Gamelan DanAnda

I’ll be performing with Melbourne Gamelan ensemble Gamelan DanAnda at a free concert on the 15th of December.

My interest and study of Indonesia stretches back to my primary school days - my primary school/high school had a strong Indonesian study focus with students learning Bahasa Indonesia. My school also had many Indonesian musical instruments and held an annual Indonesian night market.

Gamelan DanAnda is a Melbourne based community orchestra of Balinese traditional music, performing regularly for the public and open to all interested participants. Our group is focused on the ‘Kebyar’ style of gamelan, which combines bronze xylophones, bells, cymbals, drums and gongs. A community-minded, cooperative music, everybody’s part is important, from the steady time-keeping gongs to the quick overlapping rhythmic patterns that make this music unique.
